Members of the Health Advancement Research Team (HART) in the School of Sport & Exercise Sciences, together with colleagues from CaHRU, School of Health and Social Care, and De Montfort University, have just begun work on a new interdisciplinary, qualitative project under the auspices of Lincoln Institute of Health. The research seeks to understand the lived experience of asthma in sportspeople and frequent exercisers. A number of HART team members will contribute to the project: Dr Jacquelyn Allen-Collinson (Director), Dr Lee Crust, Dr Adam Evans and Ms Rachel Williams (research student). The team also includes associate members, Dr Helen Owton of De Montfort University and Professor Niro Siriwardena from the University of Lincoln School of Health and Social Care.
Dr Jacquelyn Allen-Collinson, PI on the project, said she was “delighted to be working with such a strong interdisciplinary team” and to have received funding from the University via the Research Infrastructure Fund. “Our research aims to identify factors influencing participants’ adherence to asthma treatments and self-care prescribed by healthcare professionals. We want to understand how the lived experience of asthma impacts upon individuals’ engagement with prescribed asthma treatments and self-care”, she continued. An aim of the project is to enhance GPs’ and other healthcare professionals’ understanding of the lived experience of asthma from the perspective of patients themselves.
