One in 16 people in the UK (3.2 million adults) have diabetes, costing the NHS 10 billion every year, although mortality rates from diabetic complications have fallen the prevalence of diabetes is rising. Within 10 years it is projected that 5 million people will have diabetes in the UK. Approximately 90% of diabetic adults have type II diabetes. Diabetes can be a debilitating disease that severely impairs quality of life. My colleagues and I would like to use the MRC Framework for the Evaluation of Complex Interventions – applying a mixed methods approach – to model and pilot the associations between religiosity/spirituality and quality of life in type II diabetic patients. While quality of life is the outcome measure, we aim to determine the effect of religiosity/spirituality adjusted by other covariates such as mental health, cardiovascular risk factors, biomarkers, obesity and diet and exercise on the quality of life of adult diabetic patients. A better understanding of the net effect of a combination of factors on quality of life, will help us devise more holistic and robust interventions to improve care, promote health behaviours and enhance self-management. The aim of this seminar is to have input from other colleagues to improve the concept and to proceed with this research proposal.
The LIH extends a warm welcome to all interested in this exciting area.
